Periyar Nayakar: His Questions to God
Periyar Nayakar, also known as E.V. Ramasamy, was a prominent social reformer and politician from Tamil Nadu, India. Nayakar was born on 17th September 1879 to a rich family in Erode, Tamil Nadu. He was brought up in a very religious environment and he was also given the religious title “Sevaga Siroman” He played a significant role in the Dravidian movement and worked tirelessly to eradicate social inequalities and promote rationalism.
Periyar Nayakar:
He was known for his outspoken nature and his relentless pursuit of justice and equality. One of the ways he expressed his thoughts and challenged societal norms was through a series of questions addressed to God. These questions, presented below with serial numbers, reflect his deep philosophical and ideological concerns:
1. Why did you create different castes and religions, leading to discrimination and inequality among people?
2. Why did you create a system where some people are considered superior and others inferior based on their birth?
3. Why did you make women vulnerable to oppression and discrimination, denying them equal rights and opportunities?
4. Why did you allow religious practices and rituals to become tools of exploitation and blind faith?
5. Why did you create a society where education and knowledge are withheld from certain sections, perpetuating ignorance and backwardness?
6. Why did you create a world where poverty and suffering are rampant, while a few enjoy immense wealth and privilege?
Periyar Nayakar’s questions to God were not meant to challenge the existence of a higher power, but rather to provoke critical thinking and encourage people to question oppressive social structures. He aimed to promote rationality, equality, and social justice.
Periyar Nayakar’s legacy continues to inspire generations, and his questions to God serve as a reminder to challenge the status quo and strive for a more just and equitable society.
